Who Should Debate

The debate between Evolution and Creationism is something that should be done by adults and not children. From the point of view of an education that stresses decision making and analytical thought. Children look to adults to provide them with answers and they will believe almost everything that we tell them until they hit the age of ’disbelieving'(also known as the age when you start to think of hair drug testing ). This is a huge responsibility and as a society, we need to think about how we are going to approach it. If as a parent you decide to teach your child to believe in god, then it is perfectly acceptable to teach them that god created the heavens and earth. If as a parent you choose not to teach your child about god, this is your decision as well and can explain the necessary functions of the world without reference to an almighty power. The difficulty comes when the beliefs of the family come into contact with the beliefs of the ’state’. I personally prefer to refer to the guiding principles of the state in question. In the United States the constitution directly states that there should be a separation between church and state, thus the schools should not teach the children that the earth was created by god, because this is a religious belief. In the United Kingdom, however, the Queen is the head of state and the head of the Church and there is no separation, therefore, it is logically sound that the schools have a right to teach the children religious thought.
