Asking Questions

I’m always surprised when I see people debating this subject, two people entrenched in their view so adamant that they can barely contain their vitriol. It’s always struck me as odd because it’s a genuinely interesting subject, so lets get something out of the way… of course evolution happened it’s scientific fact the more questions you ask the more answers you find.

The thing I find odd is that creationists tend to look at science as propaganda, an elaborate deception to shake their faith. However, science is about asking a question not necessarily finding the answer, it’s about exploring the things that we don’t understand.

So here is something I don’t really understand about evolution… There’s Woodpeckers all over the place, which are super adapted to hammering into trees to find their primary food source. The muscles in their necks are highly developed and skulls heavily reinforced, which is all very clever stuff. However, if you start to trace the ancestry of this it seems like a dead end, having a crash helmet skull isn’t very useful without the neck strength to use it and the alternative development of a bird which knocks itself out every time it’s hungry doesn’t seem like a prime candidate in evolutionary terms.

The answer is that you can’t deconstruct evolution into simplistic terms, the things that drive evolution are interrelated and sometimes it takes tiny steps, sometimes a giant leap and occasionally a sharp left turn.

Demanding to see every missing link to accept evolution is like refusing to accept that cars have changed over the years because you haven’t seen a Morris minors oil tank. Once something has a more successful competitor it tends to just fade away…. ‘’but if we evolved from monkeys why are there still monkeys?’’ you shout?

Because monkeys are brilliant. Ask anyone.
